Applied Professional Program Leadership Endorsement (APPLE)

The National Community Education Association's (NCEA) Applied Professional Program Leadership Endorsement (APPLE) was adopted in 2003 to provide a process in which individuals who are responsible for organizing programs are able to document, demonstrate, and articulate their competencies as professional program leaders. Individuals voluntarily completing this national endorsement process, measured by rigorous standards and performance based assessments, will earn recognition for their completion of the endorsement process.

There is a direct correlation between lifelong learning and practical experience and the endorsement process is centered on a combination of professionalism, expertise, and excellence. Recipients of this endorsement possess a significant depth and breadth of understanding program philosophy and principles, as well as a strong practical knowledge base for daily application. The successful candidates are truly considered among the best in the nation for their chosen profession of providing program leadership.

The APPLE process is intended for individuals who have:

  1. a broad base of life experiences
  2. a minimum of three years of experience in the field
  3. been responsible for programs such as:

Adult Basic Education / GED
School Age Care (latch key) English as a Second Language
After-school Programs Community Based Organizations
21st Century Community Learning Centers Community Health / Hospitals
Youth Academic & Enrichment Civic Organizations
Youth Development Faith Based Organizations
Senior Citizens Government Organizations
K-12, Professional Organizations Recreation

APPLE candidates submit an application, a $275 application fee, and portfolio documenting their competencies no later than September 15th each year. Following the submission of materials, a peer review team interview will be scheduled at the NCEA annual conference (November or December) to review the portfolio and validate accomplishments in meeting each of the 5 standards and 23 indicators.
