Mr. Herrity is currently an educational consultant with the Iowa Department of Education and has over 31 years experience as an educator.  He has over 35 years experience in public service work.  At the Department of Education, he is responsible for providing training, technical assistance, professional development, and consultation to local school districts, intermediate service centers, community colleges and community based organizations, groups, and associations concerning community and public involvement in education, agency collaboration and cooperation, service-learning, before and after school programs, school improvement, school volunteerism, and connecting the “community” with  K-12 education.   Mr. Herrity is routinely involved in conducting strategic planning sessions, facilitating training, doing presentations, working to solving community problems, organizational transformation issues and creating networking opportunities in these areas. He also manages over $28 million dollars in federal funds for teacher quality, before and afterschool programs and service-learning.


Mr. Herrity completed his master’s degree at Ball State University and has additional coursework toward his doctorate.  His undergraduate degree is from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.  He is an accomplished trainer, coach, and mentor and has extensive experience working in the fields of education, business, community-based, faith-based, and private and public non-profit organizations.  Mr. Herrity has trained well over 15,000 people throughout his career

 
In 2006, Mr.Herrity received the national Professional Service Award from the National Community Education Association (NCEA).  In 2005, Mr. Herrity received the Professional Service Award by the Iowa Community Education Association and the Public Service Award by the Iowa Family and Consumer Science Association. Also in 2005, he received the State Farm Insurance Companies Foundation Commitment Award for sustained commitment on behalf of the Learn and Serve America program.  In 2004, Mr. Herrity was inducted into the National Community Education Association (NCEA) Hall of Fame Charter Class for his pioneering and visionary work in community education across the nation and Iowa.  He is listed in the 2003-2004 edition as a member in the National Register’s Who’s Who for Executives and Professionals.   In 1998, Mr. Herrity received the Governor’s Volunteer Award and the State of Iowa Employee of the Month for his innovations and work related to service-learning and community education.  Mr. Herrity is the 1996 recipient of the “Outstanding Contributions Award,” presented by the Iowa Commission on National and Community Service for recognition and appreciation of his outstanding accomplishments in service-learning for the state of Iowa.  He was a nominee in 1994, 1995, and in 1996 for the State Top Achievement Recognition (STAR) award developed to honor state of Iowa employees who exemplify leadership and innovation in their jobs.  Mr. Herrity is listed in the 1992 edition of Who's Who in American Education, the 1988 edition of Who's Who in Staff Development for Public and Private Schools and is inscribed in the 1985 edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.  He was made an honorary "Kentucky Colonel" in 1988, which is an international society of celebrities and noteworthy individuals committed to performing humanitarian service to their fellow man, by the Governor of the state of Kentucky.  He also received the "Distinguished Service Award" in September 1985, from the Iowa Community Education Association for his outstanding leadership and advancement of community education in Iowa.  He was awarded the "Outstanding Young Men of America" award in 1976 by the U.S. Jaycees.

 
Mr. Herrity is currently a Commissioner on the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Services, former national co-chair of SEANet (State Education Agency Network for Service-Learning), past-president of NCSEACE (National Council State Education Agency Community Educators), and a past member of the Education Committee for the Institute for Character Development at Drake University.  He has served in the past on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Senior Games, the State Board of Directors with the Iowa PTA, the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society, the Board of Directors of the Iowa Foundation for Parks and Recreation, and the Board of Directors and past president of the Community Development Society of Iowa.

 
Mr. Herrity is a published author, lecturer, trainer, grant writer, producer, and coach/mentor to many professionals.  Mr. Herrity has served as a consultant to numerous state departments of education across the country, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).  He assists the Governor's Office regularly in various capacities and has taught graduate courses as a visiting professor at Drake University.  He is a frequent presenter and keynoter at many national, regional, and state conferences.  He has written numerous federal and private foundation grants totaling over $14 million.  Mr. Herrity is also a certified graduate of the Total Quality Transformation (TQT) process used throughout Iowa state government and was a contributor to the Quality Student Leadership (QSL) process used by many schools across the country.
