Making a Difference
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, which honors young people for outstanding volunteer service, has produced a new resource to help teachers incorporate community service into their curricula in a fun, flexible way. "Catch the Spirit" is a bright, eye-catching calendar for the 2000-2001 school year that features real stories of young people whose volunteer efforts have earned them national recognition as America's top youth volunteers. A companion lesson plan booklet offers twelve lesson plans to coordinate with each of the twelve monthly student profiles, as well as additional resources, tips, and ideas to make community service a regular classroom activity.
